Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk was handcuffed during his arrest at Krakow-Balice Airport on the evening of September 17. This was visible on video and was then published on social media.
A representative of the Polish Border Guard Department, Major Jacek Michałowski, told Dziennik Polski why this happened.
“This was not a detention, but a delivery to an official location,” he emphasized. “The two men were removed from the flight by the carrier and lost their status as passengers. They did not want to leave the plane at the request of the airport security service, so we were called to sort this out.
He noted that the reluctance of the individuals in question to leave the plane delayed the flight’s departure.
They were brought to us, where we explained to them why they had not flown away, what rules apply in this case, – he added. – Later, the Ukrainian consul arrived for an explanation. Then the men, after the warning they received in accordance with the rules, left the premises at about 22:00.
According to Mikhailovsky, the putting on of handcuffs was connected with the men’s behavior.
The putting on of handcuffs was connected with the pose of this gentleman, both men were gesticulating a lot because they were unhappy that they had not flown away. Therefore, putting on of handcuffs was entirely preventive, in the service premises the removal of handcuffs occurred immediately, – he noted.
Mikhalovskiy added that the men had received a warning and no further action was expected from the border service.
Both men were given a warning. While in our room, they expressed, you could say, remorse, he explained.
The Ryanair flight from Krakow to Thessaloniki (flight FR 2777), which Usyk was supposed to fly, took off from Balice at 21.30 and was delayed by 50 minutes.
