Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk was detained yesterday, September 17, in Krakow, Poland after attempting to board a plane to Valencia, Spain, where he is to begin training for a heavyweight rematch with Tyson Fury, scheduled for December 21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Usyk and his coach Sergei Lapin were denied boarding after an airline representative decided they were “not fit to fly,” ESPN reported, citing an informed source.
According to the source, Usyk explained that they were ready to fly and were simply exhausted from the nearly 14-hour journey from Kyiv. The language barrier and Usyk’s insistence that they were fine led to his detention.
Let us recall that earlier Polish promoter Andrzej Vasilevsky, having received information from Usyk’s manager Alexander Krasyuk, said that the Polish border service refused to let Usyk’s friend board the plane for unknown reasons. Usyk decided not to fly without his friend, and both were detained.
