Washington, with mediators Qatar and Egypt, is trying to reach an agreement between Israel and Hamas to end the war and release Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to Egypt, where he will meet with Egyptian officials to discuss a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. The US State Department reported this on Monday, September 16.
It is indicated that Blinken will “discuss efforts to reach an agreement that will ensure the release of all captives, alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people and help establish greater regional security.”
The statement mentioned only one stop in Egypt, and it appears that Blinken will not travel to Israel during that visit.
The US says efforts to reach an agreement between Israel and Hamas are nearing the final stage. The biggest obstacle is Israel’s demand to maintain its forces to create a buffer zone between Gaza and Egypt, as well as Israel’s details of a hostage exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
Hamas said its negotiators confirmed their readiness for an “immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip” based on an initial US proposal with no new conditions from either side.
The Israeli military found the bodies of six hostages taken by Hamas militants in tunnels under the Gaza Strip in October 2023.
