If Finland and Sweden apply for NATO membership, the alliance will receive them very quickly, Alliance General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg told CNN.
“We have a good dialogue with the political leaders of Finland … and with Sweden. Of course, it’s up to them, but if they apply, they will be approved by all 30 NATO allies. We will find ways to quickly do this ,” he said.
Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, support for NATO membership in Finland increased.
Recall that in Finland, the head of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, Miki Niikko, announced that she had resigned as head of the committee after a tweet about Ukraine and NATO. In his message, the politician invited French President Emmanuel Macron or someone else to “speak publicly and say that Ukraine will not join NATO.” The message provoked anger and criticism, as it contradicted Finland’s official foreign policy strategy, which states that any state has the right to independently make decisions in the field of foreign policy.
