Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Chinese leader Xi Jinping may meet in October.
This meeting will be an opportunity to improve diplomatic contacts between Kiev and Beijing, Reuters reported, citing former Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Oleksandr Chaly.
Chaly emphasized that “now we are all in Ukraine waiting for some kind of contacts, direct contacts between President Zelensky and President Xi.”
The director of the Department of European Studies at the China Institute of International Studies, Cui Hongjian, also hinted at a possible meeting between the Chinese and Ukrainian leaders.
We are ready to do everything that contributes to peace, he noted.
He said China was open to joining the upcoming peace summit because it did not want its efforts to “go to waste.”
In the spring, China, together with Brazil, presented its plan for settling the war in Ukraine. Its essence boils down to ending the fighting and starting direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the peace plan and called it destructive because it plays into Moscow’s hands and was not discussed with Kiev.
Let us recall that in the summer, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Chinese leader Xi Jinping promised him in a telephone conversation that his country would not provide Russia with weapons for the war against Ukraine.
