Voters of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party are in favor of Turkey joining the union.
Hungarian citizens are less in favor of EU enlargement in 2024 than last year. They are more skeptical about the idea of Ukraine’s membership. This was reported by the Hungarian publication Telex with reference to a survey by the Policy Solutions analytical center.
Last year, a majority of respondents supported the accession of several candidate countries, but in 2024 only 45% of respondents were positive about Montenegro, the country with the most support.
Among the candidate countries, Hungarians are the least supportive of Ukraine’s accession – 61% of Hungarians reject the idea of Ukraine’s membership.
Ukraine’s entry into the EU is most popular among voters of the opposition party Tisza: 34% for and 53% against. Most of the voters of this party want to see Montenegro among the EU members (50%), while the voters of Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party are looking for accession to Turkey.
The poll found that the majority of Hungarians are tired of the debate between the EU and the government, with two-thirds of respondents believing that the government should meet all the milestones set for the allocation of financial resources . The media said that this number has not changed since 2023.
Some pro-government voters – 40% – reject the idea of the country acceding to the European Commission, while 54% say the government should accept EU funds.
