On the night of September 11, a 100-meter-long bridge span collapsed in Dresden. The accident damaged heating lines, which disabled the heating system throughout the city.
This is one of the most important bridges on the Elbe, reports Tagesschau. Just 18 minutes earlier, a tram had passed through the crossing at night. Shortly after three o’clock in the morning, the rails fell into the water. The fire department is investigating the situation. Due to damaged pipes, the city’s heating supply was cut off.
Other parts of the bridge are under acute threat of collapse, the city of Dresden announced. According to an MDR correspondent, the second segment of the bridge is also sinking.
It is not yet known whether the collapse is related to the repair work currently underway on the bridge. The Caroli Bridge, which consists of three parts, has been under reconstruction since 2019.
Before the work began, the city council repeatedly mentioned signs of fatigue on the 1970s construction.
The Carola Bridge is one of four bridges in the center of Dresden. It has three lanes. One of them collapsed, where the tram tracks and a combined pedestrian and bicycle path are located.
