Kyiv may be left without the main source of drinking water due to pollution of the Desna.
Deputy Director of Kyivvodokanal Vladimir Kostyuk said this on September 10 on air at Espresso.
I would like to remind you that the Desna River remains the main source of water supply for the Desnyansky water treatment plants and accounts for 70% of the prepared drinking water for the residents of Kyiv.
There is no alternative to such a water intake today. Its loss will lead to serious consequences and imbalance of the capital’s water supply system, explained Vladimir Kostyuk, Deputy Director of Kyivvodokanal PJSC.
Unfortunately, organic pollution continues. The dilution of this pollution as modeled does not occur. Now the polluted water has descended below Chernigov.
It is impossible to model what kind of water will arrive at the water intake in four or five days. However, we expect the worst results, says Kostyuk.
If the existing technologies cannot purify the water, it will be necessary to abandon the water supply from the Desnyansky water supply stations and switch to other sources. In particular, the Dnieper station and artesian springs.
But they will not cover 100% of Kyiv’s water needs.
Earlier, Rakurs reported that the pollution from Desna could reach Kyiv, which poses a threat to 60% of the city.
This lion’s share of the capital, which may suffer, is supplied with water from the Desnyanskaya water intake station. In particular, more than 80 million UAH in losses and about 26 tons of fish died as a result of pollution of the Seim and Desna.
