The Russian and Chinese governments “at the highest level” are trying to hide cooperation in the military field.
China is giving Russia “very significant” aid to bolster the Kremlin’s military machine in exchange for secret Russian military submarine and missile technology. US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell announced this on Tuesday, September 10, Politico reports.
The publication points out that Washington has previously talked about providing Beijing with dual-use technologies that can be used for both military and civilian purposes. Now the United States is unequivocally declaring direct assistance from China to the Russian military.
“These are not dual-use weapons. They are parts of different elements of the Russian military machine,” Campbell said.
According to him, the Russian and Chinese governments “at the highest level” are trying to hide such cooperation.
A State Department spokesman noted that in exchange for Beijing’s aid, Moscow has begun to provide China with submarines, missiles and other sensitive technology, although “in the past, Moscow has been wary of providing China with its latest military technology.”
“The opportunity that Russia is providing is support in areas where it clearly does not want to engage directly with China. We are concerned about a certain number of military arenas where there seems to be a certain determination to provide of greater support to China. This has to do with submarine operations, air navigation activities, including stealth. This also applies to missiles,” Campbell said.
The Deputy Secretary of State emphasized that China’s new capabilities pose a threat not only to the United States, but also to India, Australia, Japan and South Korea.
China and Russia will hold joint military exercises this month called North-Joint 2024, which will take place in the air and in the Sea of Japan and Okhotsk.
