At least 48 people have been killed in Nigeria after a van carrying cattle and people crashed into a tanker truck.
A road accident occurred in Niger state. At least 48 people were killed when a truck, a tanker and a van carrying people and livestock collided. More than 50 heads of livestock were also burned in a fire that started after the accident.
The people, burnt beyond recognition, were buried near the crash site. Niger State Governor Mohammed Oumarou Bago expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
Niger is the most populous state in Nigeria, with a total population of about 220 million. Nigeria is prone to serious road accidents with high fatalities. According to experts, the main reasons for this are careless driving, poor road conditions and the poor condition of many vehicles.
And without an effective rail system to transport goods, fatal accidents occur on most major roads in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country.
