Ukraine has its own weapons, which are higher in range than ATACMS and Storm Shadow, the US Secretary of Defense said.
Pentagon chief Lloyd James Austin commented on the lack of US permission to use long-range weapons on Russian territory, saying that no possible development of events can be decisive. He said this at a press conference following the 24th meeting in the Ramstein format, Interfax-Ukraine reports on Friday, September 6.
“What is my opinion on long-range weapons? My focus is on helping Ukraine succeed in this tactical battle, in this operational battle, to ensure that it can defend its sovereign territory, and there are several ways to do it ” At the same time, we emphasize every time that not an expected possibility of developments in itself can be decisive, “said the Secretary of Defense of the US.
Austin recalled that the partners previously discussed the supply of tanks to Ukraine, as well as “other opportunities.”
“We are determined to do everything we can to make sure they have what they need to succeed, and we are committed to fostering the right dynamics on the battlefield that could lead to some opportunities that will help Ukraine more defend its sovereign territory well,” the Pentagon chief explained.
Answering the question of what is preventing the United States from giving the go-ahead for the use of long-range weapons on Russian territory, Austin reiterated that “there is no confidence that any given opportunity will be decisive.”
“I will continue to adhere to the point of view I expressed, I believe that, in general, Ukraine has its own significant potential to hit targets far beyond the reach of ATACMS or even Storm Shadow.” said the US Secretary of Defense.
Earlier, the media reported that the United States is not ruling out the transfer of long-range JASSM air-to-surface missiles to Ukraine. They may be included in the weapons package, which will be announced in the fall.
