A bottlenose dolphin, possibly feeling sad and frustrated, is suspected of carrying out a series of attacks on people near the town of Mihama, causing concern among local residents.
A lone and potentially sexually frustrated dolphin has been accused of attacking swimmers in Japan. The BBC reported it.
Bottlenose dolphins are believed to be responsible for 18 attacks near the town of Mihama this year. A child attacked by a dolphin this year needed 20 stitches on his finger.
At least six people were injured in the attacks last year, including a swimmer who suffered a broken rib. Another person was injured in the 2022 attack.
Experts believe that dolphin attacks may be due to “sexual frustration” due to loneliness, hormonal fluctuations or a desire to dominate.
A dolphin can also become aggressive if it has been “outed” from a group of its own kind or if it has been hurt by humans in the past. Therefore, despite their reputation as friendly animals, dolphin attacks can be fatal.
Earlier it was reported that in Japan, on the beach of the city of Mihama, four people were attacked by dolphins and injured.
