Ukraine needs permission to use long-range missiles to force Putin to reevaluate his actions.
Ukraine is trying to get permission from the West to use long-range Storm Shadow missiles for a “demonstration attack” on Russia. This, according to Kyiv, could force Moscow to negotiate a ceasefire. The Guardian wrote this on Saturday, August 24.
According to one of the publication’s sources, the idea is that Russia will consider the possibility of negotiations only when it considers that Ukraine is capable of “threatening Moscow and St. Petersburg.” However, this approach is high risk and does not yet have support in the US.
Ukraine has lobbied for months to allow Storm Shadow to be used against targets inside Russia, with little success. The President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, speaking on the occasion of the country’s Independence Day, said that Kyiv had no choice but to respond to the full-scale aggression against Russia, which was launched 913 days ago, in February 2022 – and , in particular, on Moscow’s use of aerial bombs and ballistic missiles against the civilian population of Ukraine.
“Our adversary will also know what Ukrainian retaliation means Honorable, symmetrical and he will know that sooner or later the Ukrainian response will reach any point in the Russian Federation, which is a source of danger to the life of our state. and our people,” he emphasized Ukrainian President.
In Kyiv, they believe that, seeing that the Ukrainian Armed Forces can strike deep into Russia, the Kremlin may come to the point of reassessing its actions. But few believe Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin is interested in quitting.
Zelensky argues that the consequences of Ukraine’s operation on Russian territory show that the Kremlin’s reservations about red lines have been exaggerated. Moscow has largely downplayed the offensive by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region, with leaders barely mentioning it publicly and describing their response as a “counter-terrorism operation.”
The publication recalls that the Storm Shadow missiles were developed mainly as part of Anglo-French cooperation, but since some parts of the missile are supplied to the United States, the White House must also agree to its use in Russia. Until now, Washington has refused to do so, fearing an escalation of the conflict.
US officials believe that Storm Shadow missiles and other long-range missiles may not be accurate enough at long range, and that Russian fighter jets launching glider bombs on front-line areas of Ukraine are based more outside their scope.
It has been reported that the UK has not officially approached the US about allowing Ukraine to use Storm Shadow over Russian territory. The Defense Ministry declined to comment, repeating its earlier statements that London believes Ukraine has a “clear right to self-defense”.
Remind us that Ukraine used the new Palyanitsya missile-drone for the first time. This is a Ukrainian-made weapon. President Vladimir Zelensky said this, adding that these weapons are “a completely new type.” The President emphasized that the enemy had been defeated.
Later in a press conference, Zelensky announced the “very long” missiles. “There will be other missiles, very powerful and very far,” said the head of state.
