NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said the crew of Boeing’s first manned Starliner flight will return to Earth aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon mission Crew-9 next February. The Boeing spacecraft will return automatically without a crew.
The US space agency NASA announced on August 24 that astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, who are unable to leave the International Space Station, will not return to Earth until February 2025.
The astronauts arrived at the station on June 5 aboard Boeing’s new Starliner spacecraft and were supposed to spend just eight days there. However, the spacecraft has suffered serious technical problems that make it dangerous to return to Earth.
At a press conference on Saturday, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson announced that a Space X spacecraft would be sent to retrieve Williams and Wilmore. The Starliner would be returned to Earth without a crew.
The mission began on June 5 this year and was supposed to end in 8 days, but due to engine problems, the crew is still on board the International Space Station. In total, Suniti Williams and Butch Wilmore will have to spend 8 months in orbit.
