Prison occupancy should improve in the fall, when people accused of minor crimes get reprieve.
In the UK, magistrates’ courts have been told not to sentence anti-migrant rioters until September because of prison overcrowding. The Telegraph reported this on Thursday, August 30.
It is noted that England and Wales Court of Appeal Judge Nicholas Green – one of Britain’s most senior judges – has advised magistrates’ courts to postpone sentencing for offenders on bail until at least 10 September.
Then the situation should improve: at the initiative of the new Labor government, about two thousand prisoners will be released early. And in October, a law will come into effect according to which the convicted have the right to submit a request to be released not after half of the sentence has been served, but at the 40% mark.
The Ministry of Justice ensures that the recommendation to suspend sentences applies only to offenders whose offense is not serious. High-profile and brutal crimes will continue to be prosecuted without delay.
The publication states that the country’s prisons can now accommodate about 300 criminals.
It will be recalled that in September, Britain was rocked by large-scale riots when far-right groups and anti-racism activists clashed in cities across the country.
Trouble in Britain. The protests don’t stop
