India has stayed away from the war, but that does not mean it is an indifferent observer, Narendra Modi said.
India stands for achieving peace in Ukraine through diplomacy. At the same time, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Ukrainian state must be respected. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said this during a meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Kyiv on Friday, August 23.
“We walked away from the war with full confidence, but that doesn’t mean we were indifferent observers. We were never neutral, and we had a side from day one – our side was the world…. So when we came to the land of Ukraine, I came with a message of peace,” he said.
Modi also added: “I want to tell you and the whole world that this is our belief and our commitment, and we say it very loudly and clearly – that we support respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. This is what is most important to us . “
According to the prime minister, India is ready to make its “active contribution” to a peaceful settlement.
“I have come on the eve of your Independence Day, and therefore I want all of us to work towards the speedy restoration of peace. India will be ready to make its active contribution in achieving this goal,” assured the head of the government of India.
Modi said that two years ago, he directly told Russian dictator Vladimir Putin that this is not a time for war.
“And last month, when I visited Russia again to meet with Putin, I clearly told him that problems cannot be solved on the battlefield. The only way to solve problems is through dialogue and diplomacy. And without wasting a minute, we must move in this direction, both sides must sit together and find ways to eliminate this crisis,” he emphasized.
Modi also pledged to address Ukraine’s humanitarian needs and “be two steps ahead” in addressing such needs.
Earlier, President Vladimir Zelensky said that four documents had been agreed upon with India. He also expressed hope that India will be included in the joint communiqué of the first Peace Summit.
