Finnish border guards will be able to monitor the movement of mobile phones and other radio transmitting devices.
The Finnish Border Guard will have new capabilities to control the movement of people near the Russian border thanks to the provision of radio surveillance permits. Border guards can now track the movement of mobile phones and other radio transmitting devices on both the Finnish and Russian sides of the border. This was reported by the Finnish media Yle.
The need to strengthen border control arose due to Russian provocations with migrants from Arab and African countries, which literally “struck” Finnish checkpoints at the end of 2023 and at the beginning of this year.
Monitoring can also cover part of the Russian border, which will allow suspicious activity to be detected in a timely manner. This is especially important in the context of Russia’s use of refugees to create crises on Finland’s border.
Telia Finland’s head of mobile networks, Timo Hietalahti, added that a mobile phone signal can be detected at a distance of up to 30-40 kilometers in the absence of interference, which significantly expands monitoring capabilities.
Let’s remember that the Finnish media wrote that the Russian bases near the border of Finland, despite all the threats of Moscow due to the entry of the neighboring country into NATO, are almost empty, because the Russian Federation moved of personnel and equipment in the war against Ukraine.
