The Bulgarian government said that through the joint efforts of several member states, a mechanism was introduced to activate the tariff quota.
Bulgaria has appealed to the European Commission with a request to protect its producers from “excessive imports” of eggs from Ukraine. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Georgiy Takhov said this at a meeting with representatives of the Industrial Poultry Association, reports the Bulgarian news agency BNR.
“Bulgaria requests that the European Commission implement a protection mechanism against Bulgarian egg producers due to excessive imports from Ukraine,” the official said.
According to him, he has already taken the first step by speaking about the current situation in the sector at a meeting of the Council of Ministers in Brussels.
Through the joint efforts of several Member States, a mechanism was introduced to activate the tariff quota. If this quota is exceeded, a duty will be applied on the import of Ukrainian eggs.
To introduce protection measures, Brussels must, within four months, assess the state of the EU market or individual member states for the relevant products.
Bulgaria expects the EU to take measures to protect local producers from the adverse effects of excessive imports.
