Ahead of Ukrainian offensive in Kursk region, Russian general weakens border
WSJ, citing its own sources, writes that several months before the breakthrough in Kursk region, General Lapin dissolved the council that was concerned with the defense of the region. As a result, the border was left without defense, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces took advantage of this.
And during the Ukrainian offensive, the Russians were left without a single control center. Then the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the FSB, and the Ministry of Defense of Russia began to compete with each other, figuring out who was in charge. This led to chaos.
The WSJ emphasized that the failure of the defense of Kursk region was also due to the critical shortage of troops in the region.
The publication claims that the Russian general knew about the accumulation of troops near the Russian border, but decided not to strengthen security in the region.
Lapin previously led Russian troops in the Kharkiv region in September 2022, when the Ukrainian army managed to liberate almost the entire region in more than a week.
In November 2022, Lapin was removed from his post as commander of the Central Military District when the Ukrainian Armed Forces recaptured territories in northeastern Ukraine. Then, in January 2023, Lapin became head of the General Staff of the Ground Forces and was responsible for the defense of the Russian border.
