Additional requests from the German Ministry of Defense for military aid to Ukraine will no longer be approved at the request of Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
The current budget planning of the German federal government does not provide for the allocation of new funds in support of Ukraine, the opposition is talking about a financial freeze, and therefore military support for Kyiv, according to Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.
Additional requests from the German Ministry of Defense for military aid to Ukraine will no longer be approved at the request of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, although approved materials continue to be provided in most cases.
The reason for this is the austerity measures of the Chancellery and the Ministry of Finance. Finance Minister Christian Lindner conveyed the corresponding request in a letter to Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on August 5.
The publication notes that the ban is in effect and the situation for Ukraine may also worsen soon, as planned military support is planned to be cut in half next year, and then reduced to less to one-tenth of the current value in 2027.
From the perspective of the Ministry of Finance, everything looks different. Lindner’s letter dated August 5, which is in the possession of FAS, shows that he did not expect a sudden cut in funds for Ukraine. True, the money will now come not from the federal budget, but from the frozen assets of the Russian central bank.
Ukraine’s allies confiscated about $300 billion after the massive Russian attack, and the G7 countries at their summit in Italy decided to use the proceeds to finance a $50 billion loan to Kyiv. Lindner now expects Ukraine to use the money to “cover a large number of its military needs.”
If this happens, the German currency will not be needed for a certain time. However, the decision of the G7 countries is still far from being implemented and is legally controversial. International negotiations are ongoing, and no one at any of the federal agencies FAS has spoken with knows how many months the money will arrive.
One of the interlocutors in the German government said that the limit has been reached where Germany can no longer make any promises to Ukraine.
Let’s remember that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised Ukraine more air defense, missiles and ammunition. The German side was not long in coming with the delivery.
The United States will provide Ukraine with a new military aid package worth up to $200 million
