Wind power plants generated 31% of Germany’s electricity by 2023. But every year, protected bird species such as kites and eagles are injured and killed by collisions with wind turbines.
The solution was presented by the startup ProTecBird. By 2025, it plans to install systems of 25 video cameras in two wind farms in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany.
The cameras will see birds within a radius of 1 km and will use II to assess what kind of species it is, writes Bild. For example, by the frequency of its wing beats. If an animal approaches a windmill closer than 350 m, the turbine will return the rotors against the wind, i.e. turn them off. This technology was initially developed by the defense concern Rheinmetall to protect against drones and missiles.
This will allow us to combine the use of wind energy and animal protection, said Schleswig-Holstein Environment Minister Tobias Goldschmidt (Alliance 90/The Greens). ProTecBird will offer wind farm operators the opportunity to rent the system for 8,000 euros per month.
