The Pope’s envoy for achieving peace in Ukraine spoke with the special representative of the Chinese government.
The envoy of Pope Francis, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, had a telephone conversation with the special representative of the Chinese government, Li Hui, in which they discussed finding ways of peace in Ukraine. This was reported by the press service of the Holy See, Vatican News reports on Thursday, August 15.
“During the telephone conversation, great concern was expressed about the situation and the need was noted to promote dialogue between the parties with appropriate international guarantees to achieve a just and lasting peace ,” the statement said.
It is indicated that the conversation took place on August 14.
We remind you that Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, as part of his mission as the Pope’s envoy for achieving peace in Ukraine, visited China in September 2023, where he met with Special Representative Li Hui. The visit to Beijing comes after visits to Kyiv, Moscow and Washington.
As you know, the Pope has made statements on the war in Ukraine more than once. In March, Francis said Ukraine “must dare to raise the white flag.”
