Russian hackers tried to steal the email password from former US Ambassador to Ukraine Steven Pifer.
Kremlin-linked hackers tried to hack the email of former US Ambassador to Ukraine Steven Pifer. Bloomberg reports this with reference to a report by researchers from the Access Now group and the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto.
Since February, cyberattackers have tried to steal the passwords of former US officials and scientists, as well as prominent Russian opposition figures and media organizations.
The hackers posed as another former diplomat in an attempt to trick Steven Pifer, who served as the US ambassador to Ukraine from 1998 to 2000. The attackers wanted to force him to enter his data on a fake website. It is not known if they were able to get into Pifer’s email account.
The cyber attackers are part of a group known as Cold River, which is linked to the Russian FSB. In December, the US and UK governments accused the Cold River group of being involved in multiple cyber espionage campaigns.
It was previously reported that Iranian hackers may have hacked the emails of US presidential candidate Donald Trump’s headquarters, as well as attacking the computers of advisors Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
On July 19, the United States announced sanctions against the leaders of the hacker group Revived Russian CyberArmy, which attempted to attack critical American infrastructure.
