Today the situation in Kherson and the Kherson region remains difficult due to Russia’s continued shelling and the consequences of the disaster at the Kakhovka hydroelectric station.
A UN office will be opened soon in Kherson, said Denise Brown, coordinator of the UN system in Ukraine and coordinator for humanitarian affairs. He spoke about it in an interview with the agency Interfax-Ukraine.
“We are opening a UN office in Kherson. In July, I visited several possible locations. This is the answer to your question about what comes next. Will we forget? We will not forget about the war, because we are there. I Went that in Kherson dozens of times, but I want us to be physically there. I know that in Kyiv sometimes they say: why do we need the UN?
Today the situation in Kherson and the Kherson region remains difficult due to Russia’s continued shelling and the consequences of the disaster at the Kakhovka hydroelectric station.
The UN reported that as part of efforts to overcome the consequences of the dam explosion, approximately 200 thousand have received aid. Specifically, 19 convoys delivered water, food products, medicines, and repair materials to people affected by the flood. More than 56 thousand people received cash assistance to meet critical and urgent needs. 65 thousand units of repair materials and household items were distributed in the first month of the disaster. 70 thousand people received medicines and medical supplies through mobile services.
Brown added that the UN “doesn’t forget” about the Russian war against Ukraine and that is why it is physically present in different places. Specifically, the organization has 100 UN employees in Kharkov, 300 in Dnipro, 200 in Odessa, and 50 in Nikolaev.
When Brown began his mission in Ukraine, there were about 1,800 people there, and now there are 3,200 UN employees.
It was previously reported that an office of the UN World Food Program will be opened in Ukraine. The corresponding decision was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
