The Third Reich’s Black Sea Fleet, sunk during the Red Army’s offensive, began to be raised from the bottom of the Danube.
BILD writes about an operation in the Prahovo region in Serbia. Here, the raising of the remains of the Nazi German fleet from the bottom of the Danube continues. In 1944, it wanted to evacuate more than 200 warships and cargo ships of its Black Sea Fleet and Danube Flotilla. They were planned to be taken up the Danube to the territory of the Reich.
But in August the Red Army reached the river bank upstream and blocked the passage. German Rear Admiral Paul Willy Sieb gave the order to sink the fleet.
Since then, the remains of the ships have been lying on the river bottom. They have long been an obstacle to shipping. But after the drought of the summer of 2022 and the drop in water levels, this problem has become especially acute. Every year, up to 1,000 ships pass by Prahova, including cruise ships.
Serbian Transport Minister Goran Vesic said the first German ship was raised from the seabed on Wednesday. In the coming months, the number will increase to 21. The next stage will see another 80 raised. The most difficult part is checking the explosives on board and clearing them.
Vesech promised that part of the sunken Nazi fleet would be put on public display. The European Union has allocated 30 million euros to raise the ships.
