Mexican authorities have responded to calls from the EU and Ukraine to arrest the Kremlin leader if he comes to Sheinbaum’s inauguration, scheduled for October 1.
Mexico will not arrest Russian dictator Vladimir Putin during his possible visit to the inauguration of new head of state Claudia Sheinbaum. The current President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, announced this on Thursday, August 8, Reuters wrote.
“We can’t do this. It’s not up to us,” he said.
Recall that Sheinbaum’s team invited Putin to attend the inauguration, noting that earlier this week he sent a “diplomatic message” to all countries with which Mexico maintains diplomatic relations. The agency emphasized that Russia is not a member of the ISS, but Mexico is.
Reuters also said that in June, Putin welcomed Sheinbaum, an ally of López Obrador, to victory in the election. He then called Mexico “Russia’s historic partner in Latin America.”
