Mexico, as a signatory to the Rome Statute, has legal obligations to the IUC, recalls Peter Stano.
The European Commission has called on Mexico to arrest Russian dictator Vladimir Putin if he attends the inauguration of the country’s newly elected president, Claudia Sheinbaum. This is what EC Foreign Affairs Speaker Peter Stano said in an interview with Euractiv.
The official recalled that Mexico’s membership of the International Criminal Court (ICC) means that the country is legally obliged to arrest Putin if he accepts an invitation to the inauguration ceremony in Mexico City, which will take place on October 1.
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin in March 2023 and accused the Russian president of war crimes, including the illegal deportation of children from Ukraine to the Russian Federation after a mass invasion in February 2022 .
Stano added that Mexico attended a peace summit in Switzerland in June, where “a consensus was reached that Russia should end its war against Ukraine” and that “in subsequent UN votes, Mexico. .. joined the overwhelming majority in the international community, condemning the Russian aggression and calling on Russia to stop it.”
As you know, in 2023, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin, accusing him of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine, and now the Russian leader can be imprisoned at all of countries that ratified the Charter of Rome.
Let’s add that on August 7, Mexico invited Putin to the inauguration of the country’s elected president.
