After some time in Iran, the suspect traveled to the United States and contacted someone who, in his opinion, could help him in the conspiracy.
A Pakistani man with alleged ties to Iran is in custody in the United States and is suspected of attempting to assassinate American politicians. Former President Donald Trump is one of the people he considers a possible target. Bloomberg reported this on Wednesday, August 7.
According to investigators, 46-year-old Asif Merchant conspired to kill an unidentified politician or US government officials on American soil. According to the criminal complaint, Merchant, after spending time in Iran, traveled to the United States from Pakistan in April and contacted someone he believed could help him with the conspiracy.
It was noted that former President Donald Trump was one of the people Merchant considered as a possible target. Another source said there was no evidence the Pakistani plot had anything to do with last month’s attack in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The Pakistani Foreign Ministry said it was in touch with US officials on the case and was awaiting further details. Iran’s mission to the UN said it “has not received any notification on this issue from the US government.”
The court ordered Merchant held without bail, saying he posed a “serious” threat to the United States and a flight risk.
We remind you that on July 13, at a rally before the election, there was an attempt on Trump’s life. The former US President was injured, and one of the participants in the event died. The Secret Service said the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed.
