Bangladesh’s armed forces chief has called for an end to violence amid protests that have killed more than 300 people.
In Bangladesh, amid mass protests and the resignation and flight from the country of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the army chief announced the formation of an interim government. This was reported by Reuters on Tuesday, August 6.
“I promise you all that we will bring justice to all the killings and injustice. We ask you to have faith in the country’s army… The country is going through a revolutionary period,” said the Commander-in-Chief of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, General Waqer-Uz-Zaman, who took over the position of army commander on June 23 only.
In a nationally televised address, the 58-year-old general said he had already held talks with the leaders of the main political parties, except for the long-time leader of Hasina’s Awami League.
Waqer-Uz-Zaman spoke about plans to meet with President Mohammed Shahabuddin to discuss the road.
The commander-in-chief also called for an end to the violence amid protests that have claimed more than 300 lives.
Recall that hundreds of people were killed in Bangladesh during a crackdown on demonstrations that began as protests against job quotas and turned into a movement demanding the resignation of the head of government.
On August 5, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India in a military helicopter with her sister.
