The birth rate decreased by 1.5 times compared to the period before the full-scale invasion of Russia.
In the first half of 2024, 87,655 children were born in Ukraine, which is 9% less than in the same period last year. At the same time, 250,972 deaths were recorded. Opendatabot reported this on Monday, August 5th.
According to analysts, the birth rate has decreased by 1.5 times compared to the period before the full-scale invasion this year: 87,655 children compared to 132,595 in 2021.
The majority of newborns were registered in Kyiv – 9,695 babies, in the Lviv region – 7,923 and Dnepropetrovsk – 6,962.
There are still few children born in the front-line regions: in the Kherson region (221 children) and Donbass (702). In the Lugansk region, not a single baby has been registered for six months.
It is said that for every newborn citizen there are three deaths. This ratio is one of the main indicators of the demographic crisis.
“For comparison, in the pre-Covid years of 2018-2020, there were two deaths per child in Ukraine in the first six months of 2024. This is 1.4 times less than the same period in 2021, when 349 people . However, it is worth noting that 2021 will be the peak year for deaths due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” analysts said.
The fewest deaths were in front-line Kherson region (2334) and Donbass (5753) and in Chernivtsi region (5422).
The anti-record was set in the Dnepropetrovsk region – 26,374, in the Kharkov region – 17,999 and in Kyiv – 17,449.
Let’s remember that according to the forecast of the director of the Institute of Demography and Social Research, Ella Libanova, in 10 years the population of Ukraine will be from 26 to 35 million people.
The International Monetary Fund predicts that refugees will begin returning to Ukraine as early as 2024. However, it will be slow.
