Sweden has announced that it is temporarily closing its embassy in Beirut over fears that the war in Gaza could escalate into a region-wide conflict. Before this, Sweden called on its citizens to leave Lebanon. This was announced by the head of the Swedish Foreign Ministry, Tobias Billström, writes The Local.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has ordered its employees to leave Beirut and go to Cyprus, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also planning to temporarily move its embassy,” Billström said.

The embassy will remain closed until August, but the decision to close “may be extended depending on the security situation,” he said.

According to the Swedish Foreign Ministry, about 10 thousand Swedish citizens may visit Lebanon this summer, despite the warning about the ban on entering this country, which is in effect from October 2023.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also advised Ukrainians to avoid traveling to Israel and Lebanon amid the worsening situation in the Middle East.
