Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin commanded the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group in the region.
The United States is sending a carrier strike group, additional warships and a squadron of fighter jets to the Middle East as the region prepares for Iran’s retaliation for the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. This was reported by CNN.
“We heard the Supreme Leader (of Iran – ed.) say loud and clear that he intends to avenge the killing of the Hamas leader in Tehran, and that they want to carry out another attack on Israel. We cannot just – just assuming that we, too, could potentially be victims of such an attack, so we need to make sure we have the appropriate resources and capabilities in the region,” said National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby.
On Friday, Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group operating in the Gulf of Oman.
In addition, destroyers and cruisers capable of intercepting ballistic missiles will also be sent to the Middle East and Mediterranean Sea.
Austin also ordered the deployment of a fighter squadron to the region.
The United States already has the USS Wasp amphibious assault ship in the region, operating as part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, capable of evacuating US citizens to Lebanon if ordered to do so.
Previously, US and Israeli intelligence warned that an Iranian attack could begin on August 3. Most airlines have already suspended flights to Israel and Iran.
Let’s remember that Iran raised the red flag of retaliation and announced “interesting and unusual events,” which were considered as an “announcement” of an attack on Israel.
