The Ombudsman tasked investigators from the State Bureau of Investigation to find out why the former head of the colony was given a bonus “without good reason and in an illegal manner.”
The former head of the Bozhkovsky correctional colony in the Poltava region, where prisoners were tortured, received a bonus and other payments of UAH 400,000 upon his release from office. This was announced by Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets.
The Ombudsman initiated a study of official documentation about the activities of the colony in the department for the implementation of criminal penalties of the Ministry of Justice, and the ministry began an internal investigation into the facts of torture in prisoners.
Studying the situation, the Office of the Ombudsman found that in July 2023, the head of the Bozhkovskaya correctional colony was fired at his own request, without waiting for the final conclusion of the investigation, and was paid a bonus in the amount of 400% of official salary “for special achievements at work.” There are other payments, which together with the bonus amount to almost 400,000 UAH.
In addition, as reported by Lubinets, in December 2023, the former head of the institution obtained a decision to establish the maximum level of his pension.
