American President Joe Biden took part in negotiations on the release of prisoners from Russia.
During the prisoner exchange process, US officials had no contact with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. This is what US Presidential National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said, Voice of America reported on Friday, August 2.
“There was extensive contact with Russian officials… These channels are very sensitive and they need to be protected for that reason, because having these sensitive channels allowed us to get these results ,” he says.
Sullivan added that US President Joe Biden is involved in the negotiations on the release of the prisoners.
“The President himself was personally involved in the diplomatic negotiations that led to this, including many conversations with the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, along with other leaders of the countries that gave some Russians for exchange. The most notably a phone call to the Prime Minister of Slovenia on the afternoon of July 21 to agree on final arrangements to complete this agreement,” the Biden adviser revealed.
During the briefing, reporters asked Biden if he wanted to hold an exchange dialogue with Putin. “I don’t need to talk to Putin,” the American leader stressed.
Biden called the agreement that made the prisoner exchange process possible “an act of diplomacy and friendship.”
“Several countries have helped to do this. At my request, they have joined the difficult and complex negotiations. And I personally thank them all,” said the President of the United States.
Let’s remember that on August 1, a large-scale exchange of prisoners took place in Turkey between Russia and several Western countries (USA, Germany, Poland, Slovenia and Norway). A total of 26 people were traded. Russia returns FSB killer Vadim Krasikov and spies Anna and Artem Dultsov.
