“Today I announce that the US will strengthen its military position in Europe. Together with our allies, we will ensure that NATO is able to deal with threats from all directions – on land, in the air, at sea,” he said.
In particular, the United States will increase the number of U.S. Navy destroyers in Spain from four to six, and will place a permanent 5th Army Corps headquarters in Poland.
It also plans to strengthen US interoperability with NATO forces in the eastern part of the alliance.
In addition, the United States will maintain on a rotational basis an additional brigade of 3,000 people in Romania, and increase the number of military personnel on a rotational basis in the Baltic countries.
Moreover, Washington intends to send two additional squadrons of F-35 fighter-bombers to the UK, deploy air defense systems and other military forces in Germany and Italy.
Before the summit began, Stoltenberg called it historic – Finland and Sweden would be invited to membership, and Russia would receive the status of a “threat”.
