Austin said he does not believe a major war in the Middle East is inevitable and that the United States is committed to reducing rising tensions in the region.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Washington would help defend Israel if it was attacked. The United States is trying to reduce tensions in the region after the removal of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran. He said this at a press conference in the Philippines, Reuters reports.

Austin noted that de-escalation of tensions remains a priority.

“We don’t want this kind of thing to happen. We will try to make sure that we do everything to help calm the temperature and solve the problems because of the diplomatic meetings,” he said.

The Pentagon chief added that he does not consider a large-scale war in the Middle East inevitable, and that the United States is seeking to reduce growing tensions in the region.

“I don’t think war is inevitable. I stand by that. I think there’s always room and opportunity for diplomacy,” Austin said.

Let’s remember that one of the leaders of the Palestinian group Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in the capital of Iran on the morning of July 31.
