Hungary’s move poses a “serious threat to the security of the Schengen area and many European countries and therefore needs to be responded to at the EU level.”
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said his country will appeal the decision of the European Commission Hungary to simplify the entry of citizens of Russia and Belarus, as this step threatens the security of the entire European Union. Landsbergis said this in a commentary on BNS on Tuesday, July 30.
“We are unpleasantly surprised by media information that Hungary has included citizens of Russia and Belarus in its national immigration program, which will allow them to freely enter and move within the Schengen zone,” the official said.
Landsbergis emphasized that this move by Hungary creates “a serious threat to the security of the Schengen area and many European countries, and therefore needs to be responded to at the EU level.”
A day before it became known that after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s visit to Moscow, Budapest included citizens of Russia and Belarus in the so-called “national card” program, which is given to those who wish to work in Hungary in for two years with the possibility of extension. That is, Russians and Belarusians can enter the EU through Hungary without any security checks and move freely to other countries in the bloc. The European Parliament responded by calling for strict measures to protect the integrity of the Schengen area.
