In Karelia, Russia, a dam broke due to heavy rain. Because of this, six people are missing, including two children. This was reported by the Russian media on Monday, July 29.
It was noted that the temporary bridge between the 10th and 11th locks of the White Sea-Baltic Canal was washed away. The lintel was installed during the reconstruction.
According to eyewitnesses, the flow of water swept away it and the houses of the Baltiysky dacha cooperative standing near the riverbed. A family of four and two pensioners are missing. They stopped talking after the dam broke.
The water level has receded, but local authorities have still decided to evacuate nearby communities.
The White Sea-Baltic Canal connects Lake Onega to the White Sea. It was put into operation in 1933. The total length is 227 km, of which 37.1 km are artificial waterways, the rest are rivers and lakes. 19 waterworks, locks, dams and other hydraulic structures were built on the canal.
