However, Russia learned of this and then complained to the US about Ukraine allegedly preparing a “secret operation.” Washington forbade Kyiv from implementing this plan. This was reported by The New York Times.
It is noted that in July, the new Russian Minister of Defense Andrei Belousov called the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin. In total, since the beginning of the full-scale war, the heads of the Ministries of Defense of these countries have called each other five times, and the Americans have always initiated the conversation.
However, on July 12, Beloussov himself called Austin and said that the Russians had learned of the so-called covert operation that Ukraine was allegedly preparing with the approval of the White House. The NYT writes that Beloussov asked Austin whether the Pentagon knew about the plot and that it could lead to an escalation of tensions between Moscow and Washington.
The article says that the US Department of Defense was surprised by this statement and took Belousov’s statement seriously. After that, Washington called Kiev and refused to allow the Ukrainian authorities to conduct these military events.
But whatever Belousov revealed, all three officials said it was taken seriously enough that the Americans contacted the Ukrainians and said, in essence, if you’re thinking about doing something like that, don’t do it, the report says.
It is noted that the Americans were disappointed because Ukraine risks alienating European allies and widening the war. What kind of operation it was and whether it was actually planned is still unclear.
Let us recall that the Pentagon explained the ban on US weapons striking deep into the Russian Federation by fears that the war would spread beyond the borders of Ukraine.
