Turkey at the summit in Madrid will express support for the invitation of Finland and Sweden to become NATO members.
Turkey agreed to support Sweden and Finland’s candidacies for NATO membership during the alliance summit in Madrid. This is stated in the statement of the President of Finland Sauli Niiniste, released on the night of Tuesday, June 28.
“Today in Madrid, before the NATO summit begins, we had an intensive meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, mediated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg,” the report said.
Niiniste added that as a result of this meeting, the three foreign ministers signed a tripartite memorandum, confirming that “Turkey at the summit in Madrid will express support for the invitation of Finland and Sweden to become NATO members.”
“Concrete steps for our entry into NATO will be agreed by NATO Allies over the next two days, but this decision is inevitable from now on,” the statement said.
As you know, on May 18, Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership. This decision was prompted by Russia’s war against Ukraine, which began on February 24.
In this regard, Turkey opposed the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO. Later, Ankara set 10 conditions for these two countries to join the Alliance.
