After meeting with Netanyahu, the US vice president said that Israel has “the right to defend itself, but how it matters.”

US Vice President Kamala Harris said on Thursday, July 25, that she had a “frank and constructive meeting” with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He flew to Washington to address Congress and discuss with President Joe Biden the details of a new cease-fire agreement in the Gaza Strip, AP reports.

In addition to Biden, Netanyahu also spoke with Harris, who is likely to run in the presidential election.

After the meeting, Harris said that Israel’s war with Hamas is complicated and that “often the conversation is binary when the reality is different.”

Harris said he supports Israel’s right to defend itself, but he also cited widespread civilian suffering in Gaza as the conflict continues.

“We cannot look away in the face of these tragedies. We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to suffering. And I will not remain silent,” he said.

Stressing that he and President Biden are “working every day” to bring home American hostages held in Gaza, he also expressed concern about the killing and displacement of civilians in the enclave, saying: “I will not remain silent .”

Harris recalled planting trees for Israel as a child and said that as a senator from California and as vice president, he had an “unwavering dedication to the existence of the State of Israel” and its people. He said Israel has “the right to defend itself, but how it does so.”

Let’s remember that a day before Netanyahu said that an agreement with Hamas on a temporary ceasefire and the release of hostages was “ripening.”
