The unit’s commander Mamuka Mamulashvili told The Insider about this. According to him, most of the members of the “Georgian Legion” are in Ukraine, and those who returned to Georgia were subsequently advised to leave.
Russian and Georgian special services are working in sync today. Many of our guys who were returning to Georgia were advised by Georgian special services to leave. They were told: “There are a lot of Russians here, we will no longer be able to protect you, we ask you to leave.” I do not rule out that some of the volunteers may be handed over to Russia. But only after the autumn elections [до парламенту Грузії]– said Mamulashvili.
In June 2024, the Georgian National Legion was recognized as a “terrorist” organization in Muscovy. Before that, Russian authorities had put Mamulashvili on the wanted list in connection with the case of recruiting and participating in battles for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Ekho Kavkaza and Sova write that the Georgian State Security Service has begun to summon volunteers who fought on the side of Ukraine for questioning, citing the volunteers themselves.
According to the publications, Lasha Chigladze was questioned in the Tbilisi City Court on July 19 in the presence of a magistrate judge. According to the media, he took part in military operations in Ukraine last year and was awarded a medal for courage.
The pro-government TV channel Imedi reports that Chigladze is being investigated for conspiracy to overthrow the government and “preparing terrorism.” What is meant by the second part of the wording is unclear; there is no such article in the Georgian Criminal Code, Luna Kavkaza notes. The case has been classified as “secret.”
Chigladze’s lawyer, Lasha Tkesheladze, called the case “purely political.”
Nadym Khmaladze, a member of the Anti-Occupation Movement who fought in Ukraine, also reported being summoned for questioning.
The State Security Service is summoning me, Nadim Khmaladze, under articles on coup d’état and terrorism, he wrote on his Facebook page.
It is unknown whether this is related to the case involving Chigladze. There are no other details yet.
