According to local media, the reason for the demolition is allegedly “insulting the patriotic feelings of Luhansk residents.”
The decision to dismantle them was made by city council members, allegedly after appeals from veterans’ organizations and because both monuments appeared during the Ukrainian period.
This monument appeared in the city in 2008 in memory of the thousands of Luhansk residents who died during the Holodomor. The monument to the victims of Stalin’s repressions, which was erected back in 1990 at the initiative of the local community, was also demolished.
The authorities of the terrorist LPR claim that the monuments allegedly have no historical or cultural significance and call them “fake monuments.”
Let us recall that the Holodomor of 1932-1933 covered almost all of central Ukraine and most of the east, including Luhansk region. As a result, Luhansk (then Voroshilovgrad) region lost 25% of its population, which made it one of the deadliest regions as a result of the policies of the Soviet government.
