Patrick Turner will coordinate NATO efforts and provide the Alliance with assessments and advice on the situation in Ukraine.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced the appointment of Patrick Turner as Senior Representative to Ukraine. This was reported by the press service of the Alliance on Wednesday, July 17.
Turner will begin his duties in Kyiv in September this year. As senior representative, he will head the Alliance’s office in Ukraine, “act as NATO’s liaison coordinator with the Ukrainian authorities in Kyiv,” and “coordinate NATO’s efforts and provide the Alliance with assessments and advice on the situation in Ukraine.”
Prior to this appointment, Turner served as NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Operations and Defense Policy and Planning, and held several senior civil service positions in the UK.
“I am honored to be appointed as NATO’s Senior Representative in Ukraine. I look forward to leading the NATO office and working closely with the Ukrainian authorities, as well as Alliance members and partners, to provide support to NATO in Ukraine, Turner said.
As you know, on July 9-11, at the NATO summit in Washington, a decision was made to increase the presence of the Alliance in Ukraine, in particular, to appoint a special representative in Kyiv.
It was also agreed to create a new structure to coordinate all types of assistance to Ukraine in the long term called NATO Security and Training Assistance to Ukraine (NSATU).
The Office of the President of Ukraine stated that they were satisfied with the results of the NATO summit.
