Russia is in a very vulnerable position. It is at war and its dependence on China will only grow. This is a horror for India, which must confront China on its borders and needs Russian support to do so, says Harsh Pant, professor of international relations at King’s College London.
In particular, he points to India’s dependence on Russian weapons – more than half of India’s weapons and defense equipment are of Russian origin.
The country is now trying to reorient itself towards purchasing weapons from the West, but Delhi has been dependent on Russian weapons for decades.
Pant notes that, despite cooperation with Russia, India “does not see a rupture in relations with the West.”
Much of what Modi did in Russia had to do with China, not the West, the expert adds.
On July 8, the day of Russia’s brutal missile attack on Kyiv, Dnepr and other cities in Ukraine, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi went on a visit to Russia.
According to Indian media, the trip was primarily aimed at strengthening relations between Moscow and New Delhi against the backdrop of growing cooperation between Russia and China.
India’s goal is to emphasize that India-Russia relations are important and to ensure that Putin’s growing ties with China do not impact ties with New Delhi, Chintamani Mahapatra, founder of the Kalinga Institute of Indo-Pacific Studies, told VOA.
At the same time, analysts do not believe that any breakthrough agreements will be reached during the meeting of politicians. Modi’s visit is rather symbolic and aims to maintain the existing conditions in the defense and energy spheres.
Mode traveled to Moscow for the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
