In the second round of the presidential elections in Iran, on July 6, 66-year-old Masoud Pezeshkian, a heart surgeon and former Minister of Health of Iran, won.

Iran’s newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian said he wants a “constructive dialogue” with European Union countries. He spoke about this on Saturday, July 13, in his column for the English newspaper Tehran Times.

In particular, in his publication he touched on the subject of the nuclear agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), from which the United States, under the presidency of Donald Trump, unilaterally withdrew in 2018.

Pezeshkiyan recalled that European countries promised to try to renew the agreement by softening the impact of American sanctions, but did not do so.

“Despite these mistakes, I hope for constructive dialogue with European countries to put our relations on the right track, based on the principles of mutual respect and equality,” said the president of Iran.

He emphasized that “Iranians are a proud people whose rights and dignity can no longer be ignored and Europeans must realize this.”

He called on the EU to “put the blame aside” and offered economic, technological, energy and other cooperation.

Pezeshkian also spoke to the United States, calling on Washington to “face the truth and understand once and for all that Iran will not respond to pressure.”

“I want to emphasize that Iran’s defense doctrine does not include nuclear weapons and urge the United States to learn from past mistakes and adjust its policies accordingly,” the Iranian leader wrote.

At the same time, Pezeshkian called Russia an “important strategic ally” and expressed hope for “broader cooperation” with China.

We remind you that the liberal Masoud Pezeshkiyan received the support of 16.4 million Iranians in the election, and his competitor, the conservative Said Jalili, received the support of 13.4 million citizens.
