Alliance members will invest $380 billion in defense by 2024, representing 2% of their combined GDP for the first time.
By 2025, Poland will allocate 5% of its gross domestic product (GDP) to the army. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said this on Saturday, July 13, Bloomberg Television reports.
He noted that 23 of NATO’s 32 allies now spend 2% of GDP on defense. The reasons for this are political pressure from the current and former US Presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump, as well as the war on the territory of Ukraine.
“Poland spends 4%, and we will spend 5% next year. We and the United States are proportionally number one in terms of NATO defense contributions to GDP. Obviously, this is because we no longer have in the state of permanent peace after the Cold War Here there is something to think about,” said the head of Polish diplomacy.
Sikorsky added that the level of military spending should not be the only measure for NATO members and pointed to the possibilities of Iceland, which could be a territory for stopping and refueling military equipment.
Let’s recall that on July 8, Ukraine and Poland signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of security between the countries.
