If these were initiatives that could bring some glimmer of peace and diplomacy, I would not see anything wrong with that, said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, answering Agenzia Vista’s question about the advisability of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s trip to Moscow.
The problem is that when you go and give this signal, and the next day it leads to the bombing of a hospital, it seems to me that this, unfortunately, shows a lack of readiness for dialogue on the part of Putin’s Russia.
Orban’s Fidesz party formed the Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament after the latest elections. It pushed the right-wing conservative European Conservatives and Reformers (ECR) group to fourth place in terms of the number of deputies.
The latter includes the national-conservative Polish opposition party Law and Justice (PiS) and the Italian party Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia), led by Italian Prime Minister Meloni and considered the informal leader of the EKS.
According to official data from the European Parliament, the ECR faction includes 78 MEPs.
Let us recall that in July Orban announced his so-called peacekeeping campaign – he visited Kyiv, Moscow, Beijing and met with former US President Donald Trump.
Sweden and several other European countries have announced a protest against Orban’s talks on the way
Sweden and several other European countries have decided to scale down their participation in ministerial meetings hosted by Hungary as the interim head of the European Union. The Swedish government said in a statement that Viktor Orban’s recent meeting with Putin was unacceptable.
Hungary’s actions are damaging to the union and should have consequences for Budapest. That is why Sweden is not participating at the political level in the informal government meetings planned for July, said Jessica Rosewall, Sweden’s EU minister.
Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland will be represented at the meetings by lower-level government officials, Rosewall said, adding that several other EU countries are discussing similar steps.
Hungary’s rotating presidency of the European Union will last for six months, until December 31.
