During the meeting, the American leader announced a new aid package for Ukraine. This is the eighth package approved by Biden since late April, when the US Congress passed additional funding for military aid to Kyiv. The meeting of the heads of state was broadcast on the YouTube channel of the President’s Office.
During the meeting, Biden said that over the past few months the balance on the front in Ukraine has “shifted,” and the Ukrainian Armed Forces have managed not only to stop the Russian occupiers in the Kharkiv region, but also to inflict significant losses on the enemy.
And this made it clear that Russia will not win in Ukraine. Ukraine will win, Biden is confident.
The White House chief assured that the United States would be with Ukraine “every step of the way.” He also said that work is currently underway to ensure that Ukraine uses F-16 fighters this summer.
During the meeting, the Ukrainian leader thanked the new aid package for five new Patriots and dozens of other air defense systems. Zelensky also said that he wants to discuss with Biden how to stop Russian terror, namely, to solve the problem of Russian guided air bombs.
Of course, we need quick steps to lift all restrictions on our Ukrainian soldiers,” he noted.
The Pentagon later announced that the new package included:
- Patriot air defense system battery;
- ammunition for NASAMS and HIMARS;
- anti-aircraft missiles for Stinger;
- artillery shells of 155 mm and 105 mm calibers;
- TOW anti-tank guided missiles;
- Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank missiles and ammunition.
The new package will be provided under the PDA (Presidential Drawdown Authority) mechanism, which provides for the supply of weapons directly from the US Army.
Recall that US President Joe Biden announced the transfer of an additional Patriot system to Ukraine at the opening of the NATO summit in Washington. Two more Patriots will be provided by Germany and Romania. One such system will be assembled by the Netherlands together with other partners. Italy agreed to transfer SAMP-T to Ukraine.
