Poland has been angered by Hungary’s blocking of payments from the European Peace Fund, through which the EU pays compensation to member states for weapons transferred to Ukraine. This was stated in the publication of the Polish media Onet with reference to the words of the interlocutor with the Polish government.
Warsaw and other EU members who transferred weapons to Ukraine should receive a partial refund. However, the Hungarians use the veto tool in this matter.
According to the publication, this topic was raised at a meeting of the National Security Council, organized by President Andrzej Duda on the eve of the departure of the Polish delegation to Washington for the NATO summit.
“If the Hungarians had not blocked the payments, we would have received a large part of the funds in total, we would have invested about 4.5 billion euros in aid to Ukraine. There are new reasons every time, for example, recently, there was controversy over the alleged mistreatment of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.
However, it is not yet clear when the talks between Poland and Hungary will take place. However, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski is currently not scheduled to have one-on-one talks with the head of Hungarian diplomacy, Peter Szijjártó.
“Hungary is really abusing our trust… It’s not an ally and it’s not a friendly position,” Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told Polish reporters in Washington.
The minister added that the money blocked by Budapest should go to the Fund for the Modernization of the Polish Armed Forces.
Recently, the Polish government developed a plan to put pressure on Viktor Orban on this issue. According to Onet, one of the tools should be used when forming a new composition of the European Commission.
